Taking it to the Streets - free STREET REQUIEM concert Sunday, 22 March, Brimbank

For the first time, STREET REQUIEM will be performed outdoors. This fifth performance of the work will feature the 150-strong choir of singers from The Voices of Brimbank, Brimbank Multicultural Choir and the Western Health Choir, joined by choir members from the School of Hard Knocks' Absolutely Everybody Choirs.

Originally intended for performance by community choirs the works are accompanied by piano and considerably enhanced by additional instrumentation of a didjeridu, string quartet and percussion. STREET REQUIEM was composed by Kathleen McGuire, Andy Payne and Jonathon Welch as a tribute to people who have died on the street. It aims to bring a sense of peace, remembrance and hope to communities struggling to come to terms with street violence, war and a loss of safety on our streets. It is a contemporary work including English, African and Persian lyrics alongside a modern setting of the traditional Latin texts. The harmonic language finds common ground through the work's multiple styles with melodies drawn from various modes. The Voices of Brimbank Choir performed in the world premiere of this work in 2014 at the Melbourne Recital Centre as part of the Melbourne International Singers Festival. This is the choir's much anticipated opportunity to present this work to their own community. Enjoy what is planned for a fabulous choral performance on the lawns of Brimbank Municipal Offices, Alexandra Avenue, Sunshine from 6pm - 8pm. Enjoy a community BBQ and bring along your picnic blanket, chairs and picnic dinner and settle for a unique experience in Sunshine!

Sunday 22 March 2015, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
